Hey there,

Today is one of my personal favorite days of the year: the NFL Draft. As a Dallas Cowboys fan, today begins the liturgical football calendar, during which I talk myself into it being “our year” this year. It takes about nine months for all of that hope to vanish, as my team will chaotically fall on their faces in the playoffs. Then, every year during the draft, we Cowboys fans drag ourselves up from the ground and start the whole process over again.

Now I know I’m supposed to tell y’all about college sports. But NIL policy impacts both the college and pro game now, which in turn affects the NFL draft. The 49ers GM, John Lynch, is featured in our leading story and can attest to this. Keep reading to learn about the relationship between NIL and the draft, as well as other news from around the NIL world!

KICK-OFF

NIL’s Impact on the NFL Draft Can’t be Overstated

The San Francisco 49ers dominated the NFC competition last year, and a lot of that is due to general manager John Lynch. Interestingly enough, Lynch has kept a close eye on NIL.

“83 players from this year’s class that we put grades on (returned to school),” he said in a recent interview, “So thinking there’s more than a 50-percent chance, thinking they’re entering the Draft, are back in college because of NIL and things like that… how that affects this Draft, it’s gonna be interesting.”

Lynch’s evaluation matches up with what Senior Bowl executive director and draft guru Jim Nagy said recently: “All those guys stayed in school for NIL money…You’re going to see teams drafting players late that they usually sign as priority free agents.” (More)

Aidan Shaw Shares the Love with NIL Scholarships

Missouri basketball’s Aidan Shaw is using his NIL deals to pay it forward – literally. Instead of pocketing the cash he’s earned, Shaw is giving out scholarships to graduating high school seniors as they prepare for their first years of college. All recipients have been Kansas City natives to this point.

“I wanted to invest in young people,” he said, “Value is grown in people, not things. Everybody has dreams but not opportunities, and I feel like I can assist, even a little, in our future CEOs, educators, etc… I would love for this to be a movement versus a moment.”

Now Shaw’s biggest challenge is being strategic about his giving. He’s currently in the process of establishing a foundation to give opportunities to incoming Missouri students, which could create long-lasting impact rather than short-term relief. (More)

Cal Poly is Becoming an NIL Marketing Hub

Cal Poly has joined the recent trend of incorporating NIL into the school curriculum, and thanks to professor Randy Rovegno, marketing students at the university are more equipped than many current professionals. A decades-long veteran of the sports and entertainment business, Rovegno’s curriculum tries to take NIL from theory into practice.

“When I went through school and learned about marketing, it was very textbook-oriented, black and white,” the professor said, “and when I would guest lecture at universities, I would show case studies of what we did for ESPN and the kids would gravitate towards it and go ‘Wow, this was actually interesting.’”

That desire for practical experience is what compelled Rovegno to start Athlete Lab, an educational partnership on campus that pairs athletes with marketing students to help facilitate marketing opportunities. With so many young athletes being introduced to the world of NIL, why not let some young business people get in on the action? (More)

Altius Looks to Adapt to New NIL Landscape

Altius Sports Partners established itself as an NIL industry giant from the very beginning. Starting as guides to lead athletic departments through NIL’s “regulatory abyss,” the company has adapted at every juncture, eventually adding an on-campus GM program and other NIL services.

However, with the Division I Council’s latest amendment – which allows schools to bring much of their NIL infrastructure in-house – some are predicting the company’s role could dwindle.

“One of [Altius’] main points of leverage is that the NCAA has so far restricted schools from directly soliciting deals on behalf of their athletes,” said Sportico’s Daniel Libit, “As a consultancy oriented around NIL regulations, what is Altius’ value proposition in the face of the governing body’s ongoing deregulation?” (More)

Coaches are Asking Players to Transfer Now

Many are quick to blame the current transfer portal chaos on student-athletes chasing big paychecks, but that’s only part of the story. Recently, coaches have been asking players to transfer away from the schools.

“If you don’t play within two years, there is likely chance the coach is going to ask you to leave,” CBS football analyst Carl Reed Jr. said of the recent phenomenon, “No matter what he told your mom and dad during the recruiting process, it’s too much pressure for [the coach] to win.”

Why would coaches do this? Well, there’s only so much NIL money to go around. If a highly paid recruit isn’t cutting it on the field, collectives and coaches alike are going to turn their focus elsewhere. Such is the nature of the increasingly professionalized college sports landscape. (More)

  • Tennessee’s former football coach Phillip Fulmer said the Vols would have won even more national titles had NIL been around during his tenure in the 90s and 2000s. “(UT) is doing probably as good of a job as anybody with the (NIL) collectives,” he said, adding he “probably wouldn’t have been great at (managing NIL)” from a personal standpoint.

  • Keeping the news in Knoxville, Tennessee’s softball team just landed a team-wide NIL deal with the Lady Vol Boost Her Club, which focuses on supporting Tennessee’s female sports teams. Details about the deal were not disclosed.

ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT

Jordan Chiles

In the world of gymnastics, resilience is everything. And few embody that spirit quite like Jordan Chiles. With a silver medal from Tokyo 2020 and a gold from the 2022 World Championships, she's proven herself on the international stage. As she embarks on her journey towards the 2024 Olympics, she's drawing from her past experiences to guide her path. This time around, Chiles found herself at a crossroads, torn between her close-knit UCLA gymnastics team and her Olympic dreams. Determined to find balance and mental preparation, Chiles made the decision to focus on her Olympic bid. It wasn't an easy decision. The pull of her NCAA success versus the allure of Olympic glory weighed heavily on her mind. With her sights set on the U.S. Olympic trials and Paris 2024, she remains focused on the journey ahead.

Off the mat, Chiles is using her platform to secure major NIL deals with some of the biggest names in business. Companies like Cash App, Urban Outfitters, Reebok, Amazon, Degree Deodorant, Gymshark, Levi's, Pottery Barn, Cheetos, Aeropostal, DoorDash, H&R Block, and Panda Express, have all capitalized on Jordan's stardom.
