NIL is behind the youth coaching movement in college football

Not too long ago, a college football coach’s job wasn’t too hard to explain. They coached during the season and recruited high school players during the offseason. A taxing job, to be sure, but easy enough to understand.

That feels like a distant memory now. In 2024, coaches are tasked with more responsibilities than ever; In addition to coaching and recruiting, they’re moonlighting as quasi-general managers and, of course, NIL fundraisers. That last part has shifted how schools hire coaches tremendously, too.

It’s no longer enough to hire a good coach – you must hire a good brand. It’s simply the only economically viable option.
