🏅Steph Curry's new NIL gig

The Warriors star is set on taking his alma mater's NIL game to the next level

Hey there,

I’ve been cramming every minute of my day with college basketball this week, just like you. We like to consider this “studying” for our bracket, but let’s be serious, it’s just an excuse to soak up every minute as the CBB season comes to a close. This year, your bracket will end up like it always does: Second to last in the family pool, only ahead of your daughter, who filled it out based on who had the best mascots.

Keep at it though, by all means. As we prep for March Madness, we’ve got some big updates in the NIL world for you — starting with a huge hire for Davidson’s basketball program. Then, we’re discussing the formal announcement we got this week about the new police force for NIL deals. And finally, we’ll talk about why it’s actually pretty smart for the AAC to “force” their members to pay rev-share money. It’s all coming up right now – let’s get into it!

Steph Curry Gets New Gig at Davidson

Davidson just hired their most famous alumnus, Steph Curry, as assistant GM of the school’s basketball program. Along with his new title comes a very hefty NIL investment – we’re talking millions of dollars – that will help support the men’s and women’s basketball team for a long time.

About that NIL investment: It’ll be an eight-figure fund powered by Curry and another Davidson alumnus, Matt Berman. The Curry-Berman fund is meant to provide stability to the program which, let’s face it, doesn’t have nearly the donor power as other top-flight basketball schools.

Obviously, Steph Curry will be invaluable for his roster building knowledge … but he may be even more valuable for his business connections. The Golden State Warriors star will be working closely with the global sports marketing team at Under Armour, one of his biggest sponsors, to help with Davidson’s NIL strategy. (More)

New NCAA Enforcement Arm is Officially Unveiled

We knew it was coming, but now it’s official: The NCAA and Power Conferences just formally announced the new enforcement arm of college sports. This is the entity that will police the new rules of college sports, from NIL dealmaking to tampering.

The most controversial part of this whole endeavor is the NIL clearinghouse idea, which we covered in depth last fall. The bones of it is this: to ensure no one’s exceeding the House Settlement’s rev-share “cap”, a clearinghouse will examine every NIL deal over $600 to see if it’s legitimately “market rate” for the player’s NIL. Otherwise, it’s deemed pay-for-play.

If that sounds confusing to you, it’s because it is. What does “pay for play” even mean anymore in the NIL era? I’d expect there to be some serious growing pains with this enforcement arm, as well as a few legal challenges to the clearinghouse early on. (More)

AAC Sets a Rev-Share “Floor” for the Conference

You’ve heard of a salary cap, but what about a salary floor? In order to keep their competition level high, The AAC (American Athletic Conference) is setting a rev-share minimum for member schools. In other words, you need to spend if you want to be part of the conference.

The number is $10 million – so about half of the rev-share cap that the House Settlement describes for a year. If they don’t hit this goal, the schools are subject to a “review” of their membership within the conference, per commissioner Tim Pernetti.

I really like this move as a way of ensuring long-term competitive balance within the conference. By forcing their schools to spend a minimum amount on their roster, the AAC is making sure there’s a baseline standard for quality of play for the conference. It’s their way of distinguishing themselves as a tier above other non-Power Four conferences. (More)

When you experience pain, it’s typically the result of electrical signals being sent from the location of the pain to your brain.

The worse the pain, the stronger the signal.

Kailo’s patented technology uses micro capacitors to “turn off” these pain signals like a light switch – providing natural relief, anywhere on your body, in seconds.

It’s one of the first products on the market to use microtechnology for pain relief, and it’s available at an affordable price.

Stick it on your knee, back, neck—wherever you’re experiencing pain.
