🏅Roster turnover isn't working out...

A new deep dive shows how relying on the transfer portal has hurt some CBB teams

In partnership with

Hey there,

Today is New Year’s Eve – how we feeling? Before we hunker down for an absolutely elite slate of college football games (including Baylor hopefully impounding the LSU Tigers), we’ve got some news to catch you up on.

It was a fun weekend of news – for starters, a list just dropped of the 75 most valuable college athletics programs in the country. Then, we’ve got a data-driven deep dive on how roster turnover is actually leading to less college basketball wins this season. And lastly, we just saw an NIL deal go through… in Bitcoin. It’s all coming up right now – let’s get going!

The 75 Most Valuable Athletics Programs in the Country

CNBC just released their list of the 75 most valuable college athletics programs in the country. Their methodology combined revenue, conference health, school subsidies, NIL resources, alumni network, and a few other factors to determine the rankings.

The #1 most valuable college athletics program is THE Ohio State University, with a $1.32 billion valuation. Rounding out the top three is The University of Texas ($1.28 billion), and Texas A&M ($1.26 billion).

Only one private school made the top ten, and the highest spots are dominated by the SEC and Big Ten. The first ACC team shows up at #16, and the first Big 12 team makes an appearance at #33. See the whole list at the link. (More)

College Basketball Teams with Roster Turnover 📉

According to a new piece by Evan Miyakawa, teams with massive amounts of roster turnover have been struggling during the nascent 2024-25 college basketball season. On the other hand, teams who have returned plenty of starters are outperforming expectations.

By running a statistical analysis of what’s been working so far, he came to three recommendations for college basketball roster building: Find good players, return over 50% of your starter minutes year-over-year, and recruit players that will play at least two seasons in the program.

Of course, the college basketball season is still kicking off. We’re not sure exactly how well these trends will hold throughout the year, but so far, the teams who prioritized continuity are seeing massive returns. (More)

The First Bitcoin NIL Deal

It was bound to happen (and I’m almost surprised it took this long), but we just saw a college football player accept an NIL deal paid out in Bitcoin. It’s the first deal of its kind – at least as far as the public is aware.

The agreement was made between USC linebacker Matai Tagoa’i and Strike – an app that allows users to buy and sell Bitcoin easily. The deal was brokered by House of Victory, USC’s NIL collective.

“This is a game-changer for me,” said Tagoa’I, “By taking part of my NIL earnings in bitcoin, I’m setting myself up for long-term financial growth.” (More)
