Name a more polarizing college basketball player from the mid-2000s than JJ Redick. Love him or hate him (and let’s be honest, you probably hate him) he left an undeinable mark on the college hoops world. Nobody embodied the “Duke Villain” quite like Redick (although Laetner and Grayson Allen may have something to say about that). Nevertheless, Redick knew his role: tear your team’s heart out and talk trash while doing so.
But what if the NIL era had arrived a couple of decades earlier? How would a player like JJ Redick – prolific on the court, polarizing off of it – have capitalized on his brand?
That’s exactly the question we’re exploring today. For this retro NIL valuation, we’re accounting for talent, personality, school brand, and much more before giving an NIL speculation. Oh, and we’ll also give him a modern-day NIL doppelganger, too.
Sound good? Let’s take a look at one of college basketball’s cutthroat three-point assassins: JJ Redick.
