🏅Finder's Fees, Freshman, and the Future of Football

SDSU's head coach wants smaller schools to be compensated for player development...

Teaming up with

Hey there,

Saturdays are for kicking back with college football and NIL Wire. Let’s get you caught up on everything that’s happened this week.

SDSU’s Sean Lewis offered up an interesting idea that could help small schools secure football funding; UCLA basketball is committing heavily to the transfer portal – they’re not expecting to take in any freshman next season. Oh, and the Big 12 and ACC are scheduled to listen in on potential business model solutions for college football… solutions that the SEC and Big 10 have no interest in hearing.

It’s all coming up right now – let’s lock in!

A College Football “Finder’s Fee”…?

San Diego State’s head football coach Sean Lewis just pitched an interesting idea for the NIL era: A “finder’s fee” of sorts that would reward teams for developing players. Here’s how it would work, in Lewis’ own words:

“If there is a better opportunity (at another school), in some form or fashion, there is a finder’s fee, if you will, for finding that player, for having developed them,” he explained, “At least if that great player leaves… we would at least be compensated… so that you could then replace that really good player that you just lost.”

Helps smaller schools get NIL funding? Check. Incentivizes their developing young players? Check. It would be impossible to implement right now, but consider me a fan of Lewis’ idea. (More)

UCLA Basketball is out on Freshman

In the past few years, NIL has substantially changed the way teams build their basketball rosters. For a while, upperclassmen reigned supreme. Then we entered the one-and-done era, where highly touted freshman led the way. But UCLA is embracing a new philosophy entirely: Build entirely through the transfer portal.

For the first time in 25 years, UCLA basketball is not expected to bring in a single freshmen next season. Head coach Mick Cronin explained how recent recruiting changes led to this decision.

“There’s really only one rule: You can transfer every year,” he said, “You sign early now, it used to be binding, now it’s just an aid thing. If a guy wants to change, he can sign with you and if he decides to change his mind, they’re going to let him out [of his scholarship].” (More)

Big 12, ACC to Hear College Football Proposals

Remember when we told y’all about two proposals to change how college football operates –  Project Rudy and the College Student Football League? Well, reports say that those two proposals are being floated to leaders at both the Big 12 and ACC sometime in the near future. This comes after Baylor’s President called for a summit on the future of college sports.

Before you ask, no, Big Ten and SEC representatives won’t be in attendance for these presentations. According to CBS Sports, “their commissioners have shown public disdain for both postseason models.”

Why? Probably because, after consolidating multiple top-tier brands within their ranks, both the SEC and Big 10 are trying to figure out the future of college sports without the other conferences. They’ve been in discussions about this topic for nearly a year now. (More)

Cap management has long been an aspect of professional sports, and now it’s making its way into collegiate athletics. While it may seem at first glance that the technology and methodologies used in the pros can seamlessly translate to the collegiate level, the truth is there are key nuances that differentiate how cap management operates in each market. Understanding these distinctions is essential for effectively navigating the new world of financial oversight in collegiate athletics.
