College sports' financials were broken. Here's who predicted what would happen
Hey there,
Itās the weirdest time of the year ā that sandwich in between Christmas and New Yearās, where everyone acts like theyāre working but no one actually intends on getting anything done. Oh, and some fun stuff happens in this period of time too ā the College Football Playoff resumes very soon. Itās a good time, even if unproductive.
Donāt worry though ā weāve been chugging away to get you the NIL news. Todayās edition has a few really interesting stories: First, an economistās prediction about how college athletics distribute money has finally come true ten years later; then, Deion Sanders just secured an incredible deal to incentivize his players to play in the bowl game; lastly, the numbers behind how much the CFP pays out to the teams that make it to the playoff.
Itās all coming up right now ā letās get into it!

This Economist Saw the Problem with CFB a Decade Ago
Economist Roger Noll, who testified in the OāBannon v. NCAA case, canāt help but say āI told you so.ā His decade-old theory about how college athletics operates has proven correct over the past few months.
In 2014, one of his key arguments against the NCAAās compensation restrictions surrounded the idea of āinefficient substitutionā ā with so much money coming into college sports, bloating certain pieces of the system was inevitable. Thatās exactly what happened with coaching salaries over the past decade-plus.
But now weāre seeing a slight market correction. With rev-share on the horizon, many coaches ā like FSUās Mike Norvell and Oklahoma Stateās Mike Gundy ā are taking substantial pay cuts to help pay for player compensation. (More)
Primetime Insurance for Colorado Players
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders just secured historic disability insurance deals for his players ahead of the teamās Alamo Bowl appearance. The deals will protect his guys ā two of which are expected to become top picks in the 2025 NFL draft ā from injury in their final collegiate game.
āWe have a multitude of players that are draftable, that they received a draft grade,ā Coach Prime said, āThey had visibility (insurance) all season long, we want to make sure that if something were to happen, they would cover it.ā
The move is a win-win it seems. The players get to play in their bowl game with a mitigated risk of losing out on future earnings, and the fans get to watch the best players play in the bowl game. (More)
Making the CFP is Great for Business
Reaching the College Football Playoff isnāt just exciting for fans ā itās actually very lucrative for the schools themselves. In fact, merely making it into the field of twelve results in millions for every school involved.
First thereās the ticket revenue, which ā interestingly enough ā is actually distributed to the participating conferences at the tournamentās conclusion, not simply taken in by whoever hosts the first-round home games. Thatās so as not to punish the teams with first-round byes from losing out on money.
Secondly, the TV payouts balloon depending on what conference the team comes from. Big Ten teams like Indiana, Penn State, and Ohio State got $4M each just for making the field. Oregon got $8 because of their first-round bye. If a Big Ten team wins it all, payouts could amount to $50 million. (More)
