How has your extensive background in human resources shaped your approach to creating NIL opportunities for HBCU students-athletes?
My extensive background in human resources has profoundly influenced my approach to creating NIL opportunities for HBCU student-athletes. At its core, HR is about understanding people—their aspirations, challenges, and potential—and aligning those insights with opportunities that foster growth. In the world of NIL, this translates to recognizing the unique value each student-athlete brings to the table and crafting pathways that help them shine both on and off the field.
As a people person, my ability to gain trust is my greatest superpower. Building trust is essential when working with student-athletes, parents, schools, and brands. It ensures open communication, fosters collaboration, and creates a foundation for long-term success. When an athlete trusts that you’re genuinely invested in their success, they’re more willing to take risks and step into opportunities that can transform their lives.
Being an effective HR professional also requires being a controlled risk-taker with a great imagination. This mindset is vital in NIL, where the landscape is constantly evolving, and the possibilities are endless. Whether it's imagining how a small-town athlete can connect with a local business or how to leverage a unique personal story to secure a national deal, I approach every situation with a creative lens and a willingness to explore uncharted territory.
Finally, my HR experience has taught me that anything is possible when it comes to people. I apply this belief to every NIL opportunity I create. Whether a student-athlete is at a smaller HBCU without a large collective or lacks a major social media following, there’s always a way to amplify their value and connect them with brands that align with their story and values.
At the heart of it all, my goal is to empower HBCU student-athletes to realize their full potential, not just as players but as brands, leaders, and individuals ready to impact the world.

One powerful example of how the HBCU Icon Exchange has bridged the gap between HBCU student-athletes and NIL opportunities is our partnership with PuffCuff. This small business brand focuses on helping individuals keep their natural hair in place, a product that resonates deeply with many of our student-athletes and their communities. By connecting our athletes with PuffCuff, we enabled them to promote a product they genuinely believed in while gaining hands-on experience in branding and marketing.
In addition to PuffCuff, we recently completed highly impactful NIL activation deals with Goorin Bros. and Target. These partnerships went beyond just exposure; they were a masterclass in the power of NIL. Our student-athletes didn’t just participate—they learned essential skills like creating engaging content, driving audience engagement, and showcasing the products in a way that aligned with the brands' missions.
What truly stood out in the Goorin Bros. and Target collaborations was the measurable impact. The campaigns generated impressive impressions and engagement, directly translating into increased sales for our clients. This not only validated the influence of our athletes but also demonstrated to the brands the tangible value of working with HBCU talent.

Your phone is a powerful tool—use it! Begin practicing your message by recording 2-minute videos. Talk about your story, your passions, or your goals. Play it back, learn from it, and refine your delivery. This practice will not only improve your communication skills but also help you develop confidence and a polished personal brand.
